On October 19, 2024, Turkic Foundation of Brooklyn in partnership with several sister organizations hosted an inspiring Youth Dialogue Summit, bringing together around 100 students with a shared commitment to dialogue, understanding, and community building. The event was an engaging mix of speaker sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities, fostering meaningful discussions and equipping students with skills for constructive dialogue.
The day began with a welcoming breakfast, setting a friendly and open atmosphere. Afterward, opening remarks set the tone for the day, emphasizing the importance of dialogue in fostering a respectful and inclusive society.
Key Sessions and Workshops:
Dialogue 101 – Dr. Yavuz Bayam kicked off the speaker sessions, introducing students to foundational principles of dialogue. His insights provided a solid base for understanding how dialogue can bridge differences and foster community.
Dialogue at the Prophet's Time – Dr. Resit Haylamaz followed with an enriching talk on historical perspectives of dialogue, using examples from the Prophet’s time to illustrate how constructive dialogue was practiced and valued in different eras.
Workshop I: Engaging with FAQs on Campuses – This workshop, led by Dr. Seyma Aslan and Dr. Nuray Yurt, allowed students to delve into real-life scenarios and questions frequently encountered on campuses. This practical session helped students build confidence in engaging with diverse perspectives.
Advocacy & Middle East Conflicts – Speaker Suleyman Aydogan provided an in-depth look at advocacy, discussing its role in addressing Middle East conflicts and inspiring students to approach complex issues with empathy and awareness.
Workshop II: Scripted Scenarios in College Life – Dr. Aslan and Dr. Yurt facilitated a second workshop, offering students a safe space to practice handling real-world situations that they might encounter in college, enhancing their skills in communication and problem-solving.
Best Practices: International Trips, College Clubs, and University Booklets – Said Selmanlar, Fehim Hoti, Leyla Yurt, and Bera Turetken shared best practices from their experiences, providing students with practical advice on broadening their perspectives through extracurricular activities.
The day concluded with closing remarks, highlighting the positive impact of dialogue and the importance of continued engagement with diverse perspectives. The Youth Dialogue Summit 2024 was a memorable event, empowering students with tools to foster understanding and contribute positively to their communities.
